Trails: a solution that’s GDPR compliant by design

The key to Trails’ technology is that it doesn’t collect, transmit, or store sound — it processes it only locally, at each point of application, meaning on each streetlight, classifying it through neural networks and assigning it a number or code string. As such, it is fully compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

In a digital age where data privacy has become a central concern for both individuals and organizations, the Trailslight team made a commitment to design its systems from the ground up, with maximum effort dedicated to protecting and respecting personal information.

In this context, sound-based adaptive lighting technology emerges as an innovative solution, offering a unique combination of advanced functionality and respect for data privacy.

Adaptive lighting: the solution to over-lit streets

Adaptive lighting is a solution governed by lighting engineering standards (UNI 11248) that addresses the problem of over-lit streets. This standard not only reduces energy waste and light pollution, but also helps improve road safety by preventing lighting systems from being adjusted independently of actual traffic conditions. The growing effort required by global challenges to protect the planet calls for maximizing the energy efficiency and sustainability of human-designed technologies; in this context, adaptive lighting is becoming a key element in building smarter, more sustainable cities for the future.

Excessive lighting also contributes to light pollution, which has harmful effects on nocturnal wildlife, human health, and the visibility of the night sky. This phenomenon can interfere with the human circadian rhythm and, in particular, cause sleep disturbances.

Unregulated use of public lighting is therefore a source of environmental degradation and energy waste — from the energy needed to power the lights to the wear on the materials used to manufacture them.
